Chiller systems function in the same way as to split systems. But instead of using air, chillers make use of water or water solutions to transfer the heat away from a particular space. Buildings make use of two types of chiller systems- water-cooled and air-cooled.  Both of these work on the same principles of vapor compression or vapor absorption until the refrigerant reaches the condenser and then the process changes.

Chiller systems specifically water-cooled chillers are used in medium and large buildings where there is adequate water supply. This includes places like shopping malls, hotels, airports, etc. Air-cooled chillers on the other hand are used in small or medium buildings where the availability of space and water is limited. They are used in temporary structures, sporting or other events, and restaurants.

Compared to water-cooled chillers, district cooling system components of air-cooled chillers need less maintenance and have a low cost of installation. But comparatively, they have a shorter life span.

Their district cooling design comes with a variety of attachments and choices that can be tailored according to demand. Terminal units like floor ceiling/ heating, ice bank systems, fan coils, etc can be used with chiller systems. They can be installed both indoors and outdoors. Thus, chilled systems offer the users the choice of customization.

These systems are more cost-efficient. Although they have a substantial initial investment involved, they provide more energy efficiency in the long run. 

The building that makes use of district cooling energy systems has better indoor air quality. This is because they have separate air handling systems for each location. These systems separate the polluted air contaminants and smell. 

When buildings make use of individual cooling systems like AC’s they pump toxic chemicals that can cause asphyxiation, toxicity, flammability, etc. But chiller systems make use of water that is nontoxic.
