There are many types of pharmaceutical businesses you can set up in Dubai either in the free zones or on the Mainland. A business on the mainland needs UAE citizens’ sponsorship while the free zone allows foreign investors. In both cases, you need to get your license approved by 3 agencies: 
  • Municipality
  • Ministry of Health
  • Environment Department
The types of pharmacy businesses are listed below:

  1. Pharmacy- In a pharmacy, you can find both medicines and other goods like cosmetics, toiletries, etc.  You can find these stores in most of the shopping centres in Dubai. As mentioned above, many international pharmacies have their branches here, so if you take up a franchise, you will have a brand name attached to your business and you will also get the required training for operating a business.
  2. Drug store -They sell bulk items to pharmacies.
  3. Para pharmaceutical trading - These stores are involved in trading items like bandages, lotions, hand sanitizers, etc. These goods are prescription but are not taken as medicines or for internal therapy.

For getting a license, an owner has to get the following approvals:

  1. Preliminary- Given by the HRD-Health Regulation Department
  2. Final - Given by Dubai Health Authority and Ministry of Health

Along with this, there will also be a mandatory inspection by the Health Control Department. 

The approval and registration process requires the following documents:

  • Application form
  • Copy of tenancy agreement
  • Preliminary approval of the premises
  • Blueprint of the location
  • An architect-approved and certified plan
  • A copy of the location license issued by the Dubai Municipality
  • Passport copy of the owner
  • Name of employees and their certification details
  • Copy of the pharmaceutical license given by the Dubai Trade Register

Opening pharmacies in Mirdif or any other place in the UAE requires a regulated procedure. Each step in each of the stages needs to be followed carefully otherwise you will end up losing a lot of money. So make sure you follow all the procedures and submit all the documents needed.
